Euphoria Overdrive
Natural, transparent overdrive…

“The Euphoria is my take on that elusive tone and feel made famous by “Dumble style Amplifiers” – smooth creaminess yet crunchy”
The Euphoria has been world renowned for many things over the years, but primarily it has become famous for its versatility and that old boutique catch phrase “transparency”.
When Brian created the circuit that would eventually become the Euphoria, he was working on creating a pedal that would go from clean tones to extremely fat tones while adding a bit of warmth, a natural overdrive… the goal was to make a pedal that does NOT sound like a pedal – it needed to be dynamic, have a great choice of tones (from gritty to smooth) yet be able to respond to the volume knob like a tube amp.
The hidden secret of the Euphoria is the pre-gain bass control. This gives the tone a fatness that a regular EQ stack cannot give you, it gives you a warmth and sustain to the tone that is extremely similar to that famous, elusive amp that attracts the the kind of price tag in the used market that could literally buy you a home.
If you love the sound of your clean tone, and just wish you could have more hair on the note… a little bit of grit without any change in tonality, the Euphoria will do that with ease. The 3 completely separate gain stages give you 3 distinct styles of overdrive – So, from that famous smooth amp style drive, to an open and free tone that just pushes your natural tone all the way up to a more aggressive crunch style, the Euphoria will be the first, and quite possibly last, choice you make for an overdrive pedal.

I bought one of these pedals back shortly after the name changed on it. I didn’t like it at all. I couldn’t trade it off fast enough. Years later, I saw Brian’s video on how to use the pedal. He mentioned that some people didn’t understand how the pedal was designed and were not getting the tones from it that they thought it would give them. Ever since then I wondered if that is what happened with me. I have built a couple of pedals since then and understood what Brian was saying about the circuit and how to run it. I know and understand more about pedal circuits than I knew back when I had this pedal.
The curiosity got the best of me and I bought a version 2 of the pedal. It is one of my favorite OD pedals now. I can’t believe that in the past I felt like I couldn’t get a good sound out of it no matter what I did. I now feel like I can’t get a bad sound out of it no matter what I do. It does everything from a nice light OD and on the Crunch setting with the gain and bass cranked it sounds like a fuzz pedal. I recently compared it to the Velvet Fuzz with the gain and bass cranked on the Euphoria and it is crazy how it gets into the fuzz territory. I am also going to blame what I was into at that point in my playing. I was a bit more into higher gain stuff. It has been a long road since then and I am much more into low to medium gain stuff and have been for a decade or so now. This pedal is very versatile and very musical.

This pedal has been on every pedal board, in front of every amp ( Marshall DSL, Princeton, 5w Bugera), I’ve put together. I am in the process of putting together a new, more “modern”, board and will be leaving a space for my Euphoria even as every other pedal is getting replaced.

Does anyone (Wampler?) know the Input/Output impedance specs on the Euphoria? Just curious to know how it would handle being first in my pedals or where it would play best between others… thanks!
Joel –
This pedal is incredible. It’s my fourth Wampler drive pedal and I’m still impressed every time. It’s impossible to get a bad sound out of the Euphoria. I love the crunch mode as a dirty rhythm tone. The smooth mode does a great “just breaking up” tone and more.

Ecstasy = Euphoria
My signal chain: Fender PRRI w/ Celestion G12-65<- Wampler Ecstasy (18V) <- (all other pedals) <- Fender MIA Strat
My preferred settings: Treble-12:00, Bass-9:00, Volume-Unity, Gain-12:00, Mode: Crunch
A Truly Transparent Overdrive?
Yes… with some nuance. To my ears, there's a small peak in the upper mids/lower treble and (for my pedal) the bass is at unity at 9:00. However, I would hazard a guess that these two deviations in the EQ curve contribute to how CLEAR the clipping sounds. Especially when run at 18V, it imparts a surprisingly focused clarity to any overdrive/distortion you put into it, and it has enough frequency headroom to handle the sonic overload of my silicon Fuzz Face. My previous point is important because there are many so-called "amp-like" overdrives that can handle a clean guitar signal boosted to hell, but crap out when they receive the frequency output of a fuzz face–not this one. I haven't found another overdrive that paired so well with other pedals, it really is amp-like and it's an "always-on" pedal for me. Oh, and this pedal cleans up AMAZINGLY–better than any other overdrive I've owned.
Robben Ford in a Box? *smooth*
Yes… when paired with a mid-boost. I originally bought this pedal used in 2019 while chasing Robben Ford's tone. Because the pedal's EQ curve is fairly flat (with the caveats above), the "smooth" clipping mode approximates the creamy distortion character, but not the mid-forward character associated with D-style amps. Fixing that is easy, however, with an EQ pedal or a mid-boosting circuit of your choice. It gets you dangerously close to the "Rugged Road" tone (which is my reference D-Style tone).
How Do I Use It? *crunch*
I run the pedal at the tail-end of my signal chain into a clean amp. After realizing that I would never sound like Robben, I began to fruitlessly chase the tones of SRV, Matt Schofield, and Philip Sayce. Their sounds happen to be less "smooth" and more "crunch"–a lot more trebly sparkle in their tones. And so I discovered the beauty of the "crunch" mode, which is now my favorite mode by far. Although the overdrive reaches saturation pretty quickly, it pairs beautifully with my TS-mini, Tumnus Deluxe, and Fuzz Face. I use my TS and Tumnus as overdrives (not clean boosts), and blend the overdrive with the Ecstasy… and it's heavenly. The nasty sibilance of a Fuzz Face into a clean blackface amp is smoothed out, and the sort of full-frequency nature of the Fuzz Face signal gets filtered into the Ecstasy's EQ curve. But even on it's own, with my volume pot at 8, it gives me that beautiful edge-of-breakup tone that cures my GAS and keeps me playing the guitar instead of searching the internet for my next fix.
Bottom Line…
Buy this pedal, yesterday.

I was hesitant for some time to get this pedal. I wasn’t sure how much Dumble or how much transparency this pedal was geared towards. After some research and hearing Brian’s demo I took a chance. I was just switching from a Klon style pedal and needed something with more tone control and transparency. Oh boy oh boy did I find it. I got tickled immediately when I plugged it up. If you need clarity, gain control, and a whole lot of overdrive tone control because of your compulsive tone chasing needs, this pedal is for you. It pairs well with other pedals and the build is fantastic. I got the v2 with the jacks on top, my preference. Thanks Wampler, you won me over

I own a dozen overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals. This is the one. Trust me. It has a beautiful, warm, rich tone that is the only one that you could never tell is not a cranked tube amp. I never write product reviews for anything and I love this pedal so much that I had to.

O-M-F’ing-G!!! I got my Euphoria a couple of days ago. It’s been plugged in and ready to go, but I’ve been so busy I haven’t had time try it out. I just set everything to noon (except for bass, which is at 0, per your advice) and I couldn’t believe my ears or my fingers. The tone took me completely by surprise, and the touch sensitivity is out of this world. Like, literally, unbelievable. I didn’t change a single setting until about 10 minutes into my “euphoric” experience, and that was only to toggle from Smooth to Open, and I was like, “holy sh*t, there’s even more?!?!” (I haven’t even tried Crunch yet. I’m saving that!) Then, I stepped on my Strymon OB.1, which is just before it in my signal chain, with the Output at noon and the Compression just behind 2 o’clock, and was like, WTF just happened?!?!?!?!?! THIS IS AMAZING! I apologize for how exaggerated this review must sound, but this is how I genuinely fell right now. I’m completely blown away by the tone, feel, responsiveness and overall magic of this pedal. Thank you for all the attention and craft you put into it. It is a game-changing addition to my rig. Seriously… THANK YOU. My only regret is that I bought it on Amazon at full price and could’ve saved $30 had a I bought from you direct. No, I take that back, I regret nothing. It’s worth way more than I paid for.

One of the nicest pedals I have ever owned.. has a stunning low gain setting and does a pretty good medium drive sound as well… bought it, love it and would recommended it to anyone. only down side is I find the knobs are too easy to turn. And because it can do so many different sounds, it can go from what you dialed in, to something completely wrong mid gig. Just from when your guitar cable is dragged across it. I personally would prefer just the open setting with a normal tone knob instead of bass and treble. Wouldn’t be nearly as versatile and would be as good overall but it would be easier to work with on gigs.

I took quite a long time getting around to trying the Euphoria. I’ve always been the “heavily-flavored” overdrive sort of guy, so in my mind, this “transparent overdrive” was unfairly relegated to the “no-thanks” bin without even trying it. Silly man. I’ve practically strained my eyeballs over the years, as I’ve rolled them at every reviewer saying, “…this transparent overdrive from Wampler will make your guitar sound…blah, blah, blah…”. I’m embarrassed, but I’m man enough to admit it. Oh good! Another transparent overdrive! Next!
One day, at a guitar shop here in Vermont, I plugged a strat into a Euphoria, into an AC30, and promptly fell over backward. All the love I’ve been hearing all these years has been quite well-founded.
A couple of thoughts on so-called “transparent overdrives”. I think I finally understand the point.
What frequencies have the most influence on the overall flavor of your tone? The mids! Drive pedals sport lots of variety in this arena. Drives with boosted mids, scooped mids, mids for every occasion. To my ears, “Transparent” means the mid frequencies of your signal slip through unaltered. This is the case with the Euphoria. With a treble control and a bass control (a critical feature), the Euphoria allows all sorts of interesting and deeply appealing tonal variation without changing the overall appeal of your guitar and amp, OR your guitar, ANOTHER DRIVE OR FUZZ and your amp! Ah-ha! The plot thickens!
For me, the Euphoria is a fabulous drive pedal AND a super-flexible EQ array for any number of other pedals I have. In typical use, my Euphoria is the drive for a strat bridge pickup. I don’t want to lose the typical brightness associated with a great bridge pickup, so rather than removing treble, I simply add bass, and back off on the volume. This doesnt change the lovely brightness, but rather adds bass until my sound no longer pierces my brain like a twelve-inch spike. Adding girth after a fuzz pedal is also a great use for the Euphoria. Many otherwise great fuzzes can sometimes have that untamable, penetrating, trebly tone. Positioning the Euphoria after a fuzz, yields supreme control over the EQ, AND the ability to add as much overdrive as you like under the fuzz for that massive, Jimi At Woodstock sound.
In short, if you don’t have a Euphoria, you don’t have it all.
